HOTEL OF SENS

Here we are in the 4th district in front of the Hotel of Sens which is located between the figuier street, the Saint Antoine street and the river Seine. This mansion is one of the three privates residence dating back from the middle ages that still remains. The two others are the Hotel of Cluny and the house of Jacques Coeur in Bourges.

Since the 13th century, Paris was a dependency of the archbishopric of Sens. This is why the archbishops of Sens often lived in Paris. In the 15th century the archbishop Tristan Salazar decided to build his mansion on the remains of an older hotel. This somptuous mansion was built from 1475 to 1519, which explains that it presents gothic and also renaissance style. We don’t know the identity of the architect. Then very few archbishops lived in.

The most famous inhabitant of this hotel was queen Margot who lived there in 1605 after a long exile in Auvergne, leading a libertine life even if she was already 53!for that matter Henri the 4th told her “you may try to not confuse the day and the night”!There was a fig tree before the hotel, hence the name of the street, but she decided to cut it because it avoided the circulation of her coach. Poor fig tree!

Then in 1622, the archbishops definitely left the hotel which was let to individuals until the revolution of 1789.During the revolution it was confiscated and sold and became exploited to the maximum which means it was divided in rooms and shops. In the 19th it was transformed into a bleaching house, a tin factory, a glass factory or even a jam factory!(the famous st james jam!).So when the city of paris bought it in 1911 it was extremely damaged!

The restoration works ended in 1961, year of he installation of the Fornay library devoted to decorative and fine arts and industrial technics.

Samuel Aimé Fornay was a Parisian industrial who donated money for the education of young craftsmen and the council of Paris used it to create the library.

This mansion looks a bit massive and its 3 turrets remind us military architecture. The different wings are organized around a courtyard and behind one of them is located the garden.

The main façade is adorned with two corner turrets surrounding the entrance door with a pointed arch and with an empty tympanum. The left turret lays on a gable. At the left of the other turret, on the roof, is located the most important element of the façade : an attic mullioned window, very decorated with pinacles and a gable surmounted  by a cross, which is typical of the late gothic style. You can see the other windows are rather sober and narrow.

In the courtyard you can find a big square tower adorned with machicolated balcony and which enclose a spiral staircase. The façades are decorated with basket arches surmounting doors, wide open mullioned windows, turrets and beautiful attic windows. The portal, the turrets and the square tower are authentics, the rest was restored and rebuilt from 1936 to 1962 and sometimes baddly did!
